How to Dissolve Childhood Fears Still Acted Out in Adulthood

The whole idea of tackling one’s childhood trauma is incredibly daunting. Mostly because we think of it as one humongous, pulsing mass. For us, it is the monster under the bed. But truth be told, it’s just our inner child under there, shivering in the dark, wanting nothing more than to be loved, soothed and assured that they are significant, safe and—more than anything—WANTED.

The only way your inner child can ever receive those gifts is if YOU are willing to pull them gently from their hiding place and relent to intimate terms with them. Following is an excerpt from my book, under Little Monsters:

“No matter how successful I was at ignoring their cries, the effects of their constant tugging at my heart and subconscious still showed up regularly in my life. Over and over I shoved IT—that pulsing bundle of unresolved childhood wounding—away. I did so with my relentless straining toward perfection, busyness that eased only in sleep and entangling myself in snarls of chaos, whether it be school, church, moving, changing jobs or majors, or codependent relationships. Still, I heard IT. The constant thrumming of the monster under the bed. Although I’d always sensed IT’s presence, it wasn’t until I leaned precariously into the realm of surrender, that I was forced to acknowledge that the monster under the bed was me.

If I was ever going to be fully alive, I was going to have to relent to intimate terms with IT. Not only face IT, but look into IT’s eyes, embrace IT, listen to all IT’s stories, dry IT’s tears, allay IT’s fears. After 48 years of running from IT, I opened the door wide and invited IT in.” end quote

You can never stop the haunting effects of your childhood trauma by continuing to sequester IT in the darkest recesses of your mind and heart. You’ve got to shine a light in there; just a sliver at a time.

We are so fortunate that we live in a time where we have trauma techniques that do not require us to sit and talk endlessly about what occurred in our childhood. With the treatment technique of EMDR we can simply hold one image in our mind that represents the entire trauma, for however long it takes to defuse its charge.
