Misdiagnosis of Lingering Childhood Trauma Symptoms in Adulthood
“It is never too late to be who you really are.” George Eliot
Because post childhood trauma symptoms in adulthood have not been comprehensively addressed in the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), mental health professionals have had no option but to separate out our symptoms, or perceived sets of symptoms, and tuck them into neat little categories established as the currently accepted diagnoses. The problem with that is the possibility that the core issues may not be addressed in their entirety. There are many mental health professionals, well-versed in a multitude of healing modalities that are quite intuitive as to which to use when. Unfortunately they must justify each one to an insurance company and each modality must be congruent with what is in the DSM. Too often this leaves gaping holes in the treatment plan, despite the therapist’s best intentions.
In the following posts of this series are some of the most common diagnoses assigned to those struggling to overcome post childhood trauma symptoms in adulthood.
The diagnoses I will be covering are: ADD/ADHD, Borderline Personality Disorder, PTSD, Histrionic Personality Disorder and Bipolar Disorder II/Manic Depression (both the Manic and Depressed Phase)
