New Techniques for Permanent Relief from Childhood Trauma
by Josephine Faulk, MPH · Published · Updated
Before there was Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) there was abreaction, which entailed having the patient verbally recount their traumatic experience. It was believed it would be cathartic for the patient as they would be able to picture it with fresh eyes and, with their new understanding, be relieved of any subsequent suffering. For those with post childhood trauma symptoms the possibility of being re-traumatized through strictly talk therapy was and is an enormous risk. Even the mere thought of recounting one’s chronic childhood trauma experiences is enough to send someone with post childhood trauma symptoms into a fight, flight or freeze mode. That is not helpful. It is what we want to avoid at all costs. How do we do that? By finding a therapist who knows the following techniques and can combine them in your treatment to address and heal the many wounds hidden within you. The following approaches are essential to your recovery:
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
- Developmental Needs Meeting Strategy (DNMS)
- Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)
- Brainspotting
- Imaginal Nurturing
- Visualizing an imaginary container, at the end of each session, to hold the thoughts, feelings and fears of that session safely till your next session
Guided imagery is a key component of the most effective trauma healing techniques. Western culture reveres the left brain with all its logic and language. What we need, to better facilitate healing, is to also activate our right brain. Using our imagination allows us to bypass the language and logic parts and go straight to the core issues. Medical studies, performed at Harvard, prove that imagination can initiate changes in the brain’s anatomy. The benefit of the techniques I recommend are that you often only need to hold one, representative image to work through the entire trauma. Recounting our past, detail by painful detail, is no longer a necessary component of recovery. These techniques can permanently move those of us with post childhood trauma symptoms out of the realm of victimhood and survivorship and into masterfully orchestrating our lives and thriving.
This post is second in the series: Dismantling The Trauma That Haunts You. Subsequent posts will explain each technique in detail and why it is essential for the treatment of trauma, beginning with:
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing which has been used worldwide to successfully heal millions of people. Its success rate is 84-90%. It is recognized and approved by the American Psychological Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the Department of Defense, US Department of Veteran Affairs, the Israeli National Council for Mental Health, the United Kingdom Department of Health and many other organizations internationally.
